  • 11/20/07--23:00: MP3 Fox 2008 4.11-Simple yet efficient MP3 renamer (chan 2688522)
  • Sometimes simple is better, and MP3 Fox is a good example of it. This easy tool enables you to rename MP3 files according to the data stored in their ID3 tags or a customizable naming pattern defined by yourself.

The program doesn't require installation. Simply unzip the files to any folder and you're ready to use it. You can drag and drop MP3 folders and files onto its interface and then select the rename option you prefer among three different possibilities. Also, the program can apply upper case to the first letter in all words, remove numbers and replace certain text strings, among other options. During our tests, the renaming process hardly took more than a few seconds and results were excellent.

The great thing about MP3 Fox is that you can make a preview before actually applying the changes. The downside to it is that annoying message that appears every time you rename files, asking you if you're really sure. But I guess that's a tiny flaw that I can accept in such a simple, great program.

Easily rename your MP3 files according to their ID3 tags.

  • 12/16/07--23:00: Namexif 1.0-Rename your photos using EXIF data (chan 2688522)
  • Digital cameras are great for taking loads of pictures. The problem comes afterwards: they have such similar names that it's difficult to manage them.

This is why Namexif comes in handy. This simple tool enables you to rename digital photos to more telling names, that is, the date and time when the picture was taken.

In order to rename files, Namexif makes use of the EXIF data recorded with each image. The whole process is done in a few steps – the program doesn't even require installation – and is really fast.

Namexif includes several naming templates to choose from, as well as the possibility to add a customized text after it. However, it doesn't allow you to rename files with completely new names, that is, without using the EXIF data.

Another point I didn't like was the fact that you can't get a preview of the results before actually renaming files.

While having a date instead of a random number is probably a better way to organize photos, I'm not sure if it makes recognition any better.

I don't remember every single date I took pictures, so maybe it would have been better to include a complete custom renaming as one more option.

  • 04/24/08--23:00: Mass Renamer 1.0.0.49-Rename several filles at once (chan 2688522)
  • There's nothing more frustrating than having to rename several files at once and then finding that you have to go through them one by one.

Mass Renamer allows you to change and rename files easily and quickly but not just that, it allows you to change some of the information contained in the document properties. It's particularly useful if you've been in a position where your files have been deleted and you need to restore them to their original state but don't have enough time to go through them all separately. Mas Renamer goes beyond renaming just file names however and also allows you to change whole directories (including subfolders) in one step. You can define rules for file changes and setup complex tasks to be carried out automatically while you are away from your PC. The problem is that this program seems mainly designed just for changing documents rather than other types of files. So for example, you can change documents according to Keyword, Template, Last Author and Revision History, but you wouldn't be able to change music or multimedia files.

A useful mass renamer but only for those that are editing mainly documents and need to search by a specific key field.

  • 12/02/08--23:00: Ken Rename 0.66-Simple, efficient file renaming app (chan 2688522)
  • Sooner or later everyone faces the incredibly boring task of having to rename a bunch of files. But before you start this laborious process take a look at this handy app that may save you loads of time and work.

Ken Rename is one of the most complete and customizable renaming tools I've seen. It's dead easy to use and can also be embedded into Windows File Explorer to use it directly from any folder's context menu.

You start by simply adding all the files you want to rename to the program's interface. Then, using the menu at the bottom of the interface, you select the renaming options you'd like to apply to your files. There are a few to choose from: replacing character strings, changing case, inserting or removing text, or replacing the original name with a completely new one, to name a few. The good thing about Ken Rename is that you can add several actions to a list and perform all of them together with a single mouse click.

Ken Rename can also work with hidden, read-only and system files. Plus, it features special support for MP3 and EXIF tags, which enables you to rename music files and images making use of the information stored in tags. Obviously this last option only works well when your music files are properly tagged and your images have EXIF data.

Ken Rename is a simple-to-use yet fully featured file renaming tool with which you can rename hundreds of files in just a few seconds.

  • 04/13/10--23:00: File Grinder 0.1.2.0-Rename media files based on their meta-tags (chan 2688522)
  • Renaming files is always a long, boring task. So why not take advantage of meta-tags to automate the whole process?

This is precisely what you can do with File Grinder, a handy tool that helps you rename files using the data stored in their meta-tags. As these tags are mainly used in media files, that's the kind of file File Grinder works with: images (JPG), audio (MP3, WMA, APE, AAC, Ogg and APE), and video (MPEG, AVI), as well as ebooks (FB2) and HTML.

File Grinder includes a powerful editor to create and manage renaming templates, so that you can keep different profiles for various purposes or according to different file formats. All the changes you apply show on the program's interface in real time, which enables you to check everything before actually renaming the files. File Grinder supports regular expressions as well, and besides renaming can also help you move and copy files in batches.

The only drawback to File Grinder, if any, is that the Find and Replace utility is too hidden (you need to click the little arrow button beside Template Editor) and it's not very intuitive to use.

If you need a quick, easy way to rename media files, File Grinder is what you're looking for.

  • 04/21/10--23:00: NameWiz 4.11-Rename multiple files with minimum effort (chan 2688522)
  • NameWiz is a handy, straightforward application that can lend you a hand in the boring task of renaming multiple files at the same time.

With NameWiz you can easily rename multiple files simultaneously in just a few clicks. The program features a simple interface with a somewhat old design, but its pretty functional. The left sidebar gives you access to different renaming actions, while the tabs on the right let you choose between renaming files or folders, creating folders with automatic names and checking the program’s log.

Renaming options in NameWiz are impressive: you can remove, replace, insert, delete, move or swap characters, change upper and lower case, add prefixes and suffixes, or even replace the whole name with a completely new word. All changes are displayed in real time in NameWiz’s main area, and applied immediately – no confirmation whatsoever – when you hit the Apply button.

The best thing about NameWiz is that its functionality can be extended with plug-ins, making it easier to rename special files like MP3s, or change the file’s attributes.

NameWiz lets you effortlessly rename hundreds of files at the same time.

  • 08/17/10--23:00: PFrank 2.33-Rename programs in bulk (chan 2688522)
  • PFrank is simple but convenient way to change and alter multiple files in one go without having to go through them one by one.

The developer claims to have been motivated by the lack of a decent renaming program as most have to be run with multiple passes using different sets of renaming sequences until finally getting the required names. PFrank allows you to rename everything you want to in one go using a Windows Explorer style interface. However, it does have a lot of options for deciding how and what type of files you want to rename which can be a bit tricky. For this reason, the developer has started a forum which deals with most of the main problems. Particularly with the new features that have been added, you may experience problems. These include the new plugin for insertion of meta data from raw image files (e.g. cr2, nef, sr2) and a much improved undo facility, new filters, new positioning controls and the ability for users to plug in their own renaming commands. There's also a recently added custom list manager for managing any number of custom lists for repeat file changing.

For those that do a lot of file changing and renaming, PFrank is an excellent mass file name changer that will ensure you save time.

  • ReNamer is a small, simple looking batch file renamer that is considerably more powerful than it looks.

First things first. Although ReNamer is easy enough to use, its wealth of renaming options is considerable and definitely aimed at the more advanced user. • 11/29/11--23:00: Métamorphose 2.0.8.2 Beta-Powerful and flexible renamer for files and folders (chan 2688522)
  • Renaming a file is no big deal; but when you have to rename a bunch of them simultaneously, it's a different story. In those cases, you need a tool like Métamorphose.

With Métamorphose you can easily rename hundreds of files with a minimum effort. The program features a clear interface divided into four tabs, each of them devoted to a different purpose: picking the files or folders you want to rename, tweaking the actual renaming options, sorting the files in a variety of ways and finally checking for any error messages or warnings that the program may display.

It sounds confusing, but Métamorphose is in fact very easy to use. The most important tab is 'Renamer', where you actually create the new name for your files. Métamorphose supports several renaming methods (inserting a custom string, moving text, replacing certain characters and swapping elements around, among others) and you can use as many of them as you want simultaneously.

To make things even easier for you, Métamorphose lets you preview your renamed files at all times – before actually renaming them – and lets you also undo the renaming operation in case something goes wrong.

Métamorphose is a complete free renaming tool with plenty of options.
